About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
This is a field-based initial teacher education programme and is aimed at students who are currently working (on a paid or voluntary basis) in a range of early childhood education centres/services. The first year focuses on learning and understanding the theoretical and educational concepts; the second year on the implementation of these, and the third year builds on both the theory and the practical aspects, at the same time encouraging students to become more critically reflective practitioners. The field based early education learning is contextualised in relation to the students every day practice within early childhood educational settings (Practicums). Graduates will have developed understanding, knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas: ideas; teaching principles; concepts; research methods; problem-solving techniques; comprehension to assess information from a range of sources; developed intellectual independence; critical thinking and analytic rigour; communication and collaborative skills; understand the unique place of Maori as Tangata Whenua, inter-relationships and reciprocity between theory and practice; effective leadership and advocacy skills for children, families/whanau, society and the teaching profession. Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council. This will qualify Graduates to teach in licensed and chartered early childhood education services. Graduates will be eligible to undertake post graduate study.
