About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

Students in the Master of Linguistics will be part of the research culture of the Linguistics programme within the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. The MLing degree will prepare graduates who:
*have specialised knowledge of a range of current areas of linguistic research, including those of an interdisciplinary nature
*have a grounding in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods for collecting and analysing linguistic data
*are able to make critically informed decisions about the methods appropriate for investigating different research questions
*are able to develop their own complex ideas related to linguistic structure and language use based on a sound understanding of relevant research
*communicate effectively and accurately about linguistic research in different contexts and through different media
*demonstrate intellectual integrity and a thorough understanding of the ethics of scholarship.

With these attributes, developed in the formal curriculum and tested through academic assessment, graduates will have the knowledge, skills and experience to undertake independent advanced research in linguistics, including interdisciplinary perspectives. The programme prepares students for entry into PhD programmes in New Zealand or internationally. In addition, the programme develops in students high-level transferable skills for language-related fields, including language and social policy, marketing, and speech technology.
