What can I expect out of this qualification?

Students in the Postgraduate Certificate of Linguistics will be part of the research culture of the Linguistics programme within the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. The PGCertLing degree will prepare graduates who: * have specialised knowledge of at least one current area of linguistic research * have a grounding in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods for collecting and analysing linguistic data * are able to make critically informed decisions about the methods appropriate for investigating different research questions * are progessing towards being able to develop their own complex ideas related to linguistic structure and language use based on a sound understanding of relevant research * communicate effectively and accurately about linguistic research in different contexts and through different media * demonstrate intellectual integrity and an understanding of the ethics of scholarship. With these attributes, developed in the formal curriculum and tested through academic assessment, graduates will be building towards having the knowledge, skills and experience to undertake independent advanced research in linguistics. In the programme students will develop some high-level transferable skills for language-related fields, including language and social policy, marketing, and speech technology.

Minimum requirements

The entry requirements for the PGCertAppLing are a Bachelor s degree (or equivalent qualification) with a grade average of B or better in Linguistics, English Language, Education or a language other than English (or another relevant degree), and at least two years of professional experience in language education or another area of applied linguistics or a related field. Applicants without relevant experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be expected to complete bridging courses depending on the nature and extent of their previous experience and qualifications.
