About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The Bachelor of Music Theatre is an applied, industry-integrated programme targeted at school leavers seeking a formal, full-time Music Theatre training in order to prepare for a career in the Performing Arts industry.

The diverse graduates of the programme will be reflective theatrical practitioners with the technical and collaborative skills which enable them to be engaged in and contribute to performing arts practice in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally. In addition, these graduates will be equipped with the ability to communicate and innovate within their industry and across a range
of creative and cultural contexts.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved* subjects and ◦Literacy* - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and ◦Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627) Note: Students who have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (eg International Baccalaureate, Cambridge examination) should contact CPIT for requirements. Alternative requirements Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. CPIT literacy and numeracy assessments are available. Additional requirements Application Applicants are responsible for submitting the completed Application to Study form with the requested information. Applications are accepted throughout the academic year. All applicants will be required to attend an audition. Auditions are held during August and September of each year, however, early or late applications and auditions may be arranged in consultation with the programme leader. Applicants will be ranked from the audition process. Candidates are given marks under the following headings: Interpretation, Communication, Intonation, Technique, Vocal Quality, Sense of Pitch and Rhythm, Cold Read, Comprehension, Diction, Alignment, Physical Expressiveness. Absentee auditions may be arranged (such as overseas applicants) via video-tape or DVD with applicants interviewed by telephone.
