Entry requirements

Entry to the Bachelor of Building Surveying and Control programme is open to students who meet the following entry criteria:
GENERAL ADMISSION
Academic Requirements
The award of UE in New Zealand (or equivalent)

The following is required to be awarded UE:
NCEA Level 3
14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved subjects.
Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
* 5 credits in reading
* 5 credits in writing
Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
* achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
* unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required), or
* numeracy unit standard 32406 OR te pāngarau unit standard 32412.

English Language Requirements
Where English is not the Applicant's first language, evidence showing sufficient competence in English to complete this programme successfully is required. International students must demonstrate English proficiency for study at Level 7 in one of the NZQA approved English proficiency tests as set out in the Approval, Recognition and Accreditation Rules 2022 Appendix: Internationally Recognised English Proficiency Outcomes for International Students.

Equipment requirements
Provide own personal protection equipment to enable them to enter safely while on worksites under supervision.

* Unlimited broadband

* Up-to-date antivirus software

Work Experience Requirements
Applicants for general admission are not currently working in the building and construction industry and may be interviewed to assess their suitability for the role and motivation to study the programme. This includes the ability to complete a minimum of 746 hours of authentic work experience in Building Surveying and Control in New Zealand.

In-Employment Admission
Admission for applicants who are in employment must:
1. be currently working in a technical role in the building regulatory environment (or similar) for 1 year.
2. provide a workplace agreement from their employer to support their enrolment

International students
International students are enrolled in the In-Class option. Exceptions to this may be granted by the HOD and accompanied by a Work Visa

Special Admission
Applicants must have:
* attained the age of 20 years on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the certificate is to commence; AND
* provided sufficient evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the qualification. This can be provided with written evidence, an interview, referee checks or a combination of these.

Enrolment
Students who are employed by Building Control/Territorial Authorities or similar are enrolled in the In-Employment delivery pathway as agreed with their employer who undertakes to ensure that relevant authentic work experience meet the requirements of the programme is available to students.

All other students without relevant work experience are enrolled in the In-Class delivery pathway where the greater percentage of learning is teacher directed with work experience provided through simulations, field trips and case studies.

About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The programme aim is to provide employable graduates with the knowledge and skills to survey buildings and assess building applications against legal requirements and regulations. Graduates will gain knowledge and experience in processing plans, conducting building inspections, preparing for court proceedings, working with building codes and standards, and using digital tools that support building surveying requirements.

The programme provides an entry pathway to building surveying and control for those new to the industry and interested in careers assessing and maintaining the safety and quality of the built environment. It provides a pathway for graduates who hold diploma or past qualifications in building surveying and control and recognises knowledge and skills for those who are currently employed in the industry and seeking career progression.
