Supporting Tamariki With Complex Learning Needs (Micro-credential)

The micro-credential is designed for those who are experienced early childhood or primary sectors working within the sector. To achieve this programme, students will be required to: a)work within an early childhood or primary education setting to complete the required 110 work integrated learning hours; and b)have access to, and be able to work with, a child who has a complex learning need in order to fulfil the learning and assessment requirements. The ability of the student to fulfil these two requirements will need to be confirmed at an interview prior to being accepted onto the programme. Full attendance is encouraged to maximise learning opportunities and to optimise success for students
For entry into this programme, applicants will need to:
* either hold:
- the New Zealand/National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and
Care (Level 3) or higher OR
- NCEA Level 3 OR
- equivalent academic achievement on a case-by-case basis OR
- an academic discretion from the Executive Dean.
* attend an interview to confirm they:
- have existing knowledge and skills in working with children as an
educator; and
- are currently working in an acceptable educational setting (either paid or
unpaid).

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The aim of the micro-credential is to provide educators with the skills and knowledge to more effectively respond to and support the educational, cultural and emotional needs of tamariki with complex learning need(s). The micro-credential is intended for qualified and experienced early childhood or primary teaching professionals who wish to develop a toolkit of strategies that can be used when working with tamariki who have a complex learning need(s) such as autism spectrum disorder. Note, this micro-credential does not cover assessing or testing for learning disorders or disabilities.
