What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrical industry with commercially competent registered electricians who are able to work independently to install, test, commission, and maintain electrical installations and equipment safely; and in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992.

The qualification includes strands to recognise the differences between electricians who work in domestic, commercial and industrial sectors and electricians who work in the electricity supply sector.

The qualification encompasses the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) electrical theory and regulations examination requirements for registration as an electrician. Graduates may use this New Zealand Certificate as evidence of having met the minimum applicable standards when applying to the EWRB for registration under the Electricity Act 1992.

Graduates will not be able to practice as an electrician until they have met all EWRB registration and licensing requirements.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

To be eligible for entry, trainees must be in employment and engaging with work related to the scope of the programme. The employer and trainee, in conjunction with The Electrical Training Company (ETCO), must complete a training agreement. The trainee must meet the eligibility requirements for a New Zealand Apprenticeship documented by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). Candidates must have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2) in Mathematics, English or equivalent knowledge and skills before starting the apprenticeship. ETCO may enrol trainees working in New Zealand under work visas into this programme without being a signatory to The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, until 31 December 2023.
