About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to recognise the skills and knowledge required to provide advanced person-centred and/or relationship-centred care and support for a person with complex needs, and their whānau and/or family.

This qualification is targeted at individuals who have significant experience in a health or wellbeing setting and who are looking to gain the additional knowledge and skills required to provide person-centred/ relationship-centred care and support to a person with complex needs, and have the leadership capabilities and technical skills that can be demonstrated in the workplace.

The graduates will benefit by gaining recognition of transferable skills and knowledge valued across the health and wellbeing sectors and the specific skills and knowledge required to perform a role within these sectors.

The community will benefit through the provision of high quality health and wellbeing services by individuals who are trained to support people, their whānau and/or family, and the wider community.

Graduates will be capable of working under broad guidance and may have some responsibility for the performance of others.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

GENERAL ADMISSION 1. Academic Requirements New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 3 or equivalent. OR Minimum 2 years' relevant work experience (full-time employment) or 3 years' relevant work experience (part-time employment) in a health care role in an aged care or disability setting. 2. English Language Requirements Where English is not the applicant's first language, evidence showing sufficient competence in English to complete this programme successfully is required. International students must demonstrate English proficiency as set out in the NZQA table for Internationally Recognized English Proficiency Outcomes for International Students for study at Level 4. This could be an IELTS score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5, or an equivalent internationally recognised test. 3. Work Experience Requirements In addition to the academic requirements, applicants may be interviewed to assess their suitability for the role and motivation to study the programme. This includes the physical ability to provide personal care for residents and complete the minimum hours of paid or volunteer work experience in a relevant health and wellbeing setting. Applicants will need to provide: * A police report with no convictions of concern (violence, abuse and dishonesty). * Immunisation record including all COVID-19 vaccinations. IN - EMPLOYMENT ADMISSION 4. In-Employment Requirements In addition to the above requirements, applicants must: * be currently working or volunteering in a support worker role in an aged care or disability setting. * provide a Work Experience Agreement from their employer to confirm their employment. Only students on a work visa with a variation of conditions indicating permission to undertake a programme of study, can be accepted as international students into the in-employment study option.
