What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is for those intending to further develop underpinning skills and knowledge of building, construction and allied trades.

Graduates will have knowledge, skills, and experience of building, construction, and allied trades that may also assist with the achievement of NCEA and future employment. This qualification is not intended to recognise the level of commercial competence required of trade professionals.

Graduates will be able to perform construction tasks and undertake a Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills (BCATS) project, under limited supervision, within a range of construction and allied trades learning environments such as school workshops, training establishments, outdoor areas, and industry placement workplaces.

Minimum requirements

To qualify for Government tuition subsidy and gain admission to Turanga Ararau applicants will need to be: * A citizen of New Zealand citizens that includes tauira and kaitono from the Cook Islands, Tokelau, or Niue who hold New Zealand citizenship OR * A permanent resident of New Zealand OR * A citizen or permanent resident of Australia residing in New Zealand To gain entry to the New Zealand Certificate in Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills level 3 applicants will need to hold levels 1 and 2 BCATS qualifications or equivalent or are able to demonstrate equivalent competency and, at interview, the commitment to complete the academic and practical requirements of the programme. Applicants will require numeracy and literacy credits required to complete NCEA Level 1 or demonstrated equivalent competence. Applicants for whom English or Maori is not their first language will need an IELTS score of 5.5 in general training, reading and general training writing or equivalent. This programme frequently requires working outdoors requiring applicants to be physically able, in good mental health and not suffering any form of head trauma or poor vision. Others with impairments such as very low level attention, specific learning disorders and autism can successfully complete the programme with additional identified support and learning resources and arrangements.
