About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification will provide Aotearoa New Zealand with graduates who have the skills and knowledge to operate under indirect supervision to deliver exercise instruction for individuals within the general population.

Graduates will operate within a framework of health and wellness in relation to individual, group or community needs and contribute to the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Graduates can adapt and deliver appropriate exercise programmes and will have knowledge of exercise training principles and concepts.

Graduates will be eligible to register with the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements - Applicants under 20 years of age must have NCEA Level 1. For applicants 20 years of age and over there are no minimum academic requirements. English language requirements - NZ Certificate in Sport Coaching (L3), NZ Certificate in Sport Officiating (L3), and NZ Certificate in Sport, Recreation and Exercise (L3): All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Applicants whose first language is not English must have demonstrated an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply), completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 with any endorsement), approved scores on IELTS tests (Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5) or completion of accepted international equivalents. NZ Certificate in Exercise (L4): Applicants whose first language is not English must have demonstrated an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply), completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 with Academic or Applied endorsement), approved scores on IELTS tests (Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5) or completion of accepted international equivalents. Special Entry - In exceptional circumstances, an applicant under the age of 20 years who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme where they supply evidence of their ability to succeed on the programme.
