What can I expect out of this qualification?

The Bachelor of Social Work Te Tohu Paetahi Tu Tangata is a professional bicultural qualification designed to prepare beginning practitioners who are skilled, competent, ethically and culturally safe, research informed and critically reflective. Graduates will be equipped with the recognised social work knowledge, attitudes and values of professional social work practice locally, nationally and globally. The qualification will provide students with the foundation knowledge and professional skills that enable them to demonstrate the competencies required by the Social Workers Registration Board for provisional registration.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

To gain entry to the Bachelor of Social Work Te Tohu Paetahi Tû Tângata programme, applicants must be: 17 years of age or over; New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or have the requisite visa for study purposes; and Able to demonstrate adequate literacy and/or numeracy skills to enable them to meet all academic and health and safety requirements of the programme/course on which they enrol. Academic Entry Criteria: For domestic applicants under 20 years old: University Entrance/NCEA credits as per NZQA requirements; or Evidence of recent study at Level 4 or higher on the NZQF (if applicable). For applicants 20 years old and over: Demonstrated academic ability (at NZQA Level 4 or equivalent) to undertake the Bachelor of Social Work Te Tohu Paetahi Tû Tângata programme and have the ability to succeed through personal attributes, work and life experience. English Language requirements: In accordance with the Social Workers Registration Board, all applicants to the programme who do not have English, te reo Mâori or New Zealand Sign Language as their first language, or who did not undertake their secondary schooling in English must provide evidence of having achieved an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 in each academic category: reading, listening, writing, and speaking; and In the event that concern is raised related to communication competency in the English language, any student (domestic or international) may be requested to undertake an English language test prior to or during the programme. If the student is found to have an IELTS score of less than 6.5 in all bands (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) they maybe temporarily withdrawn from the programme until they can demonstrate the required English language competency. Other Requirements: Applicants who have had a criminal conviction at any time in the past must declare the circumstances in confidence to the Programme Area Lead
