What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is for people who want to develop in-depth understanding and knowledge of tikanga within a specialist field founded on a Māori worldview.
Graduates of this qualification will have in-depth knowledge and skills to self-manage and contribute to the practice of tikanga within defined contexts.
Graduates of this qualification will be able apply comprehensive knowledge fundamental to tikanga practices across the community in general.

Minimum requirements

Applicants will have a moderate to high level of proficiency in oral te reo Maori demonstrated by the ability to participate in bilingual and full immersion environments as evidenced by interview and/or in consultation with relevant iwi/hapu or organisation(s). This requirement will include the capacity to perform traditional oral protocols and actively participate in debate/discussion on topical issues that affect Taranaki. Selection of students will be based on five criteria (as discussed at an interview): Taranaki Whakapapa - ability to demonstrate whakapapa links to, or association with, any of the iwi/hapu between Mokau to the north and Taipake in the south. Also included are descendants of Taranaki based iwi associated with the areas of Waikanae, Te Whanga-nui-a-tara. Whakatu, Waikawa and Wharekauri. Reo Proficiency - ability to participate in bilingual and ful limmersion environments to a moderate to high level of proficiency. This will include the capacity to perform traditional oral protocols and actively participate in debate/discussion on topical issues that affect Taranaki. Community Involvement - people who are actively involved in community reo-based projects/services will be given priority. Emphasis will be placed on the persons potential to utilise the reo content from this programme directly in his or her reo-based projects. Ability to attend - the programme will be best served by regular attendance which promotes the continuity of content and delivery. Skills or Experience - a persons capacity to contribute to the overaching project of the revitalisation of Taranaki reo
