What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide Aotearoa New Zealand with proficient early childhood educators who can provide and/or support the practice-based education and care of mokopuna - infants, toddlers, and young children in a range of early childhood contexts.

This qualification is intended for people who intend to work as early childhood educators or proceed to further study. This qualification does not lead to teacher registration.

Graduates may work independently or as part of a team in a range of early childhood contexts including those underpinned by specific philosophies, and to proceed to further study. It is also intended to enhance community outcomes.

Minimum requirements

Academic Requirements NCEA Level 2 or New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) Additional Requirements - Character Reference: Two satisfactory character references are required which address the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand Good Character and Fit to be a Teacher Policy 2007. These should be from persons in positions of trust or responsibility such as an employer, pastor, kaumatua or kuia. References from family/whanau, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted. - Consent to Disclosure of Information: Successful applicants will be required to complete a New Zealand Police Consent to Disclosure of Information form. The form will be sent by Ara to the Police Licensing and Vetting Service and returned in confidence to the Programme Leader. Information on the NZ Police Vetting Service is available from the New Zealand Police website. - Interview: An interview will be held prior to acceptance to assess suitability for working with children in the community and ensure Ara meets the legislative requirements of the Children's Act 2014 English Language Requirements apply
