What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide Aotearoa New Zealand with people who have introductory skills and knowledge to participate in the care and education of mokopuna - infants, toddlers, and young children, in an entry-level role in an early childhood context.
This qualification is intended for people who intend to work as entry-level carers or early childhood educators or proceed to further study. Graduates will contribute to improving society and community wellbeing outcomes and strengthening whanau/families.
Graduates will be able to operate under limited supervision. The ECE setting will determine the specific requirements and the level of supervision under which graduates will operate when employed, which will generally be direct supervision.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
NCEA Level 1, or equivalent Applicants who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements will be eligible to be enrolled where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. If English is the not the applicant's first language, candidates will need an IELTS (Academic) score of 5 with no band score lower than 5, or equivalent. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age. Applicants must be in paid or voluntary employment for at least four (4) hours a week and be under the supervision of an experienced early childhood education educator in an early childhood education or related setting. Applicants must pass a police vet to the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. Applicants must provide the name, email address and phone number of two people who the applicant knows in a professional capacity who have agreed to act as a referee, and who will provide a confidential report in support of the application.
