About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The aim of the Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking programme is to produce work ready graduates with the personal attributes and specialised knowledge and practical skills necessary to make an immediate contribution in viticulture and wine industry environments whether locally, nationally or internationally. Students gain substantial theoretical understanding and a broad range of technical and practical skills related to grape growing and wine production. They may also choose elective options which introduce a business management thread. The Programme will utilise the knowledge and expertise of Marlborough and Nelson industry members and the local scientific community to provide an informed and dynamic learning environment for both blended and online learners. Emphasis is placed on applied science and contributing to the sustainability of the New Zealand wine industry. It focuses on vocational learning and a "realistic" approach to viticulture and winemaking.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements for applicants under 20 years, NCEA University Entrance OR a qualification deemed to be equivalent by NZQA. Applicants 20 years and over will be assessed on previous academic and work experience and accepted at the discretion of the Head of Department or delegate. Additional entry requirements for all applicants include, an interview. If English is not the applicant's first language they must provide evidence of an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each band, issued within the last two years OR equivalent. It is strongly recommended that students enrolling in this Programme have achieved 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 in Chemistry or equivalent, 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 in Physics, Statistics or Calculus or equivalent. Distance learners must be employed or have recent relevant experience and access to a suitable wine industry workplace, to undertake assignment and practical work required for specific courses, be able to attend compulsory residential workshops, be able to attend NMIT or partner tertiary institute to complete examinations. In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be accepted at the discretion of the Academic Committee.
