He Korowai Akonga: Bachelor of Education develops and applies Maori worldview, philosophies and theories of education to the practice of ako (reciprocal and transformational relationship of teaching and learning), aro (assessment, evaluation, reflective praxis), whanaungatanga (enduring relationships) and te hiringa (spirituality and passion).
Embracing Matauranga Maori, this degree supports individuals to be reflective, culturally aware and responsive practitioners, who are able to think deeply and critically about education, its issues and potential and their role within it.
An endorsement in adult education will further the abilities of individuals to teach at tertiary level.

Minimum requirements

All prospective äkonga for He Korowai Äkonga are required to meet the eligibility criteria of Te Wänanga o Aotearoa and Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand Standards for the Teaching Profession. The entry requirements for He Korowai Äkonga with an endorsement in Primary teaching are: 1) Applicants are 18 years or older at enrolment; 2) Have a demonstrated personal suitability with an interest or involvement in teaching and learning; 3) If under 20 years of age, applicants must have the required NCEA credits for university entrance; 4) If applicants are over 20 years of age, applicants must have successfully completed a level 4 certificate of at least 120 credits and met the competencies required in literacy and numeracy; 5) Provide evidence of competence in one of the languages of the national curriculum - English or te reo Mäori; 6) Those who do not meet these criteria, special admission may be granted at the discretion of Kairuruku and the Takiwä Academic Committee; 7) All applicants must complete an application package; 8) Provide supportive references; 9) Provide evidence of their ability to successfully pursue and complete a bachelor's degree; 10) Participate in an interview process to demonstrate suitability to the programme; 11) Complete and submit the Police Vetting information and Criminal Convictions Disclaimer forms.
