About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrical industry with people who have introductory knowledge that underpins safe electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and servicing of electrical installations and equipment.
The qualification provides pre-entry foundation knowledge of electrical engineering and is suitable for those who wish to enter the industry and who do not yet have an electrical apprenticeship agreement.
Graduates of this qualification are not electricians but will have an operational and theoretical knowledge of electricity production, distribution, and utilisation, and can carry out a limited range of prescribed electrical work safely and ethically under general supervision in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992.

Minimum requirements
Students must be 16yrs of age or over. Candidates must have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2) in Mathematics, English and Physics ore General Science, or relevant electronics or engineering qualifications before staring programmes leading to this qualification. Students must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate satisfactory Literacy and Numeracy levels. An interest in employment in the electrical engineering area would be an advantage. There may be further restrictions when this course is offered under a Tertiary Education Commission contract. International students or other students for whom English is a second language must have an IELTS score of 5 or provide evidence of and NZCEL Level 3 or equivalent.
