What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the apiculture industry with individuals who have the knowledge and skills to supervise and oversee a viable apiculture business.

This qualification is for people who are single source, comb, or medical grade manuka honey producers; pollination service providers; or self-marketing producers.

Graduates will be able to work independently and could supervise others.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Applicants must have the New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3) [Ref: 2223], the National Certificate in Apiculture (Level 2) [Ref: 1036], the National Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3) [Ref: 1069]; or have equivalent skills and knowledge. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older; and be NZ Citizens or have NZ Residency. Applicants must be working in the apiculture industry to complete this programme (for a commercial beekeeper, more than 400 hives) or run more than 26 hives themselves. Applicants must have access to the businesses standard operating procedures. Applicants must have evidence of having completed the AFB recognition test. If a prospective student does not have this credential then PCTI will support them to gain it. Beekeepers must not have any allergies to bee stings or pollen; and have good eye sight (with or without corrective lenses). Applicants must be fit and healthy and reasonably strong because some heavy lifting is involved (20kg +). They must be able to work the hours required of the bee season (Spring and Summer). This will include weekends and at night. Applicants will participate in a pre enrolment interview. Enrolment is subject to the Programme Manager's approval.
