About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the barbering industry with qualified barbers who can work independently as standalone operators in a commercial environment.
Graduates will be recognised by industry as qualified barbers. They will also be capable of contributing to barber shop operations when required.

Minimum requirements
NCEA Level 2 or equivalent OR New Zealand Certificate in Barber Skills (Level 3) OR New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) OR New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) (Level 4) OR demonstrated interest in the Barbering industry and evidence of the potential to succeed, as determined on the basis of a CV, evidence portfolio and interview. All applicants must show evidence of a level of literacy and numeracy sufficient to (i) be able to study at this level, and (ii) interpret and apply health and safety requirements. LNAAT or similar assessment of literacy and numeracy may be required. All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. For international students wishing to enrol in the NZ Certificate in Commercial Barbering (l4), ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include the following: successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (subject to the conditions in EIT s Database for English Language Proficiency (DELP)) completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4 with any endorsement) IELTS Academic score of 5.5, with no band score lower than 5, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment accepted international equivalents to the above IELTS scores, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment (see equivalency tables in the DELP) Special Entry A candidate who is 20 years of age or more and does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme on the basis of a portfolio of evidence of their ability to succeed on the programme and subject to an interview.
