About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is:
- To supply the food and beverage sector with employees who are able to provide service in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars or clubs, restaurants offering table or buffet service, establishments catering functions in-house, or baristas.
- To provide a credential for those individuals who are employed as service personnel that will support their employment opportunities across a range of establishments in the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic service that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
The strands in this qualification allow graduates to specialise in an area of food and beverage service.
Graduates will be able to operate to provide food and/or beverage service in a casual dining or bar context.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
Academic Requirements: There are no general academic entry requirements for this programme. It is, however, strongly recommended that applicants have completed the requirements for Literacy and Numeracy for NCEA Level 1 or equivalent. Option 4: Certificate in Bar Services (40 Credits) NOTE: There are no age restrictions to complete this programme, but it should be noted that a person must be of or over the age of 20 in order to apply to the District Licensing Committee for a Manager's Certificate. English Language Requirements Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake the programme which is taught and assessed in English.
