About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is:
- To supply the food and beverage sector with employees who are able to provide service in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars or clubs, restaurants offering table or buffet service, establishments catering functions in-house, or baristas.
- To provide a credential for those individuals who are employed as service personnel that will support their employment opportunities across a range of establishments in the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic service that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
The strands in this qualification allow graduates to specialise in an area of food and beverage service.
Graduates will be able to operate to provide food and/or beverage service in a casual dining or bar context.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements: No minimum academic requirements English Language requirements: All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 5.0 issued within the last two years (or equivalent). All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Additional requirements: Applicants must be physically able to undertake the practical components of the programme. Workplace delivery requirements: * Applicants must be in employment in a café or barista setting for a minimum of 20 hours per week. * Applicants must enter into a three-way training agreement with their employer and NMIT. * International students are not eligible for workplace delivery due to immigration requirements to attend 20 hours of class per week.
