About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is:
- To provide the hospitality sector with junior chefs who have the knowledge and skills to produce basic dishes in a commercial kitchen.
- To provide a credential for those employed or interested in a career as chefs in junior positions, that will support their employment opportunities in a commercial kitchen across the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic cookery that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
Graduates will be able to operate in a commercial kitchen as chefs in a junior position producing basic dishes.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
Domestic applicants must be: - Sufficiently competent in numeracy and literacy to be able to complete the programme (Step 2 on online assessment tool) -Physically able to complete the work -Minimum of 16 years of age - An interview is required upon application for the programme. - New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident (funding requirement) International students must be: -18 years or older -have an IELTS (Academic) score of at least 5, with no band score lower than 5.5 OR alternative NZQA approved proficiency outcomes for entry at level 3 OR an equivalent score on the Ignite English Language Entry Assessment in compliance with Rule 18 requirements.
