About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is:
- To provide the hospitality sector with junior chefs who have the knowledge and skills to produce basic dishes in a commercial kitchen.
- To provide a credential for those employed or interested in a career as chefs in junior positions, that will support their employment opportunities in a commercial kitchen across the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic cookery that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
Graduates will be able to operate in a commercial kitchen as chefs in a junior position producing basic dishes.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
Applicants may either have completed NZ Certificate in Hospitality (Level 2) and/or have NCEA L2 and/or work experience in the sector which demonstrates capability and motivation to succeed at level three. Applicants must be capable of working in a commercial kitchen environment for at least four hours - able to move safely around appliances and work benches, able to work with heavy food containers, and not likely to impede the work of others when working collaboratively in a high pressure and high risk environment. Applicants whose first language is not English should provide evidence of the equivalent of NZCEL Level 3 (General) / IELTS 5.0 or High B1 on the CEFR Framework.
