Useful information to help your enrolment decisions

About the Key Information for Students

Key Information for Students (KIS) is a core set of information that learners have told us is important for decision making.

Why do you need to know this information?

You can use the Key Information for Students to support your decisions about tertiary enrolment, along with other information you may find.

Key Information for Students is just one of many tools available and not the only source of information. You should also talk to family and friends, and check out other online information.

Entry requirements

Minimum requirements

The minimum or preferred criteria you need to meet before being accepted to study this qualification at this provider.

Detailed requirements

Links to more information about additional entry criteria the provider may require before you can be accepted into the qualification.

Remember

  • Meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t necessarily guarantee acceptance into a qualification.
  • Check out the 'detailed requirements' for any other criteria and contact the education provider to be sure.

Duration

This is an indication of the minimum time it takes to complete the qualification. However, this will vary depending on your workload and whether you are studying full time or part time.

Tuition fees

Student fees

  • Annual
  • Total qualification

The estimated annual tuition and compulsory course costs, as well as the total tuition and compulsory course costs you need to pay to study this qualification over its duration – for example, three years for a Bachelor of Arts.

This information helps you to consider both the annual and total financial contribution required from you to complete a qualification, and the possible return on investment.

Remember

  • These are an indication of the fees for domestic students and are meant as a guide only.
  • Always check with the tertiary provider to confirm your exact cost of study.
  • The fee represents the average cost of the qualification – the cost is affected by your course selection, as different courses have different fees.
  • The amount shown only relates to tuition and compulsory course costs – you will also have to consider course-related costs and living costs when working out your full cost of study.
  • Some tertiary providers offer qualifications with discounted or zero fees (see provider websites for more information).

Government tuition subsidy

  • Annual
  • Total qualification

The average amount paid annually by the Government to the education provider when you enrol in this qualification, as well as the total amount for the qualification.

This information gives you an idea of the Government’s investment in your qualification. It allows you to see the bigger picture by calculating the overall cost of your qualification and the return on investment.

Remember

  • This shows the average contribution made by the Government for domestic students studying this qualification, and is additional to the fees paid by you.

Total

This field provides the total cost of the qualification annually, the combined amount paid by the student and the Government, and the total cost for the duration of the qualification.

Student loan information

Links to more information about student loans including what they are for, if you can get one, how much you could borrow, and how to apply. Check out StudyLink and work out living costs, course costs and how to budget your study using the SUSSED app on the website.

Compulsory Student Services Fee

Remember

  • Compulsory Student Services Fees and other non-course related costs are not included in the calculation for student fees.
  • Tertiary providers that charge a Compulsory Student Services Fee will link to this information from the Key Information for Students on their website.

Student Success

Successful course completions

This gives you an idea of how likely you are to complete this qualification, based on students who completed it last year with this provider. Your success will depend on your own personal motivation and circumstances.

Information about qualifications NZ-wide

The fields in this part of the Key Information for Students are gathered from national data. They refer to all graduates in this subject area and NZ Qualifications Framework level nationally and not just at one education provider.

National graduate outcomes

The graduate outcomes information is published by the Ministry of Education and will be updated in the Key Information for Students whenever new information is available.

This provides information about the outcomes of tertiary study and what learners do when they finish. The information is based on the NZSCED which classifies the qualification into a subject area.

This information relates to young graduates who are working in New Zealand and have been employed for four months or more (part time, full time or self-employed).

Median earnings, earning range and in employment

Remember

  • Earnings is an indicative amount only, intended to give a guide to what you could earn after you complete your studies.
  • The information currently measured and published only relates to earnings.
  • This information is based on historical data – it may change in the future.
  • The Ministry of Education uses data for young graduates for this information as this provides a more accurate picture – work experience can make a difference.
  • Labour market conditions, employment and earnings change over time.
  • Employment data includes both full-time and part-time work but excludes those enrolled in further study – earnings will be higher for those in full-time employment.
  • Employment and earnings data may not necessarily be relevant to the qualification.
  • Median earnings are the halfway point in the ranking of earnings – half the graduates have earned more than this amount and half have earned less.
  • Lower and upper quartile earnings show the range of earnings for the middle half of all graduates. If all the earnings are ranked from highest to lowest and split into quarters, lower quartile earnings describe the cut-off point between the first and second quarters in the ranking of earnings. A quarter of graduates have earned less than this amount and three-quarters have earned more. Upper quartile earnings describe the cut-off point between the third and fourth quarters in the ranking of earnings. A quarter of graduates have earned more than this amount and three-quarters have earned less.

Graduate earnings quartiles

In further study

This information relates to young graduates who remain in New Zealand and have enrolled in further tertiary study.

Remember

  • 'In further study' may indicate qualifications in this area have education pathways that you can enrol in after completing this qualification.

On a benefit

This information relates to graduates who did no further study and were on a benefit for at least four months of the year and the time on a benefit was longer than any time in employment.

What else should you be aware of?

Qualifications with majors

Some qualifications, for example a Bachelor of Arts (BA), allow a student to select a major as a substantial part of the degree.

There are usually a number of different majors available and a number of different courses that can make up the qualification.

Remember

  • There may not be a standard set of courses that make up the qualification.
  • Some majors have different requirements and may have different fees from other majors associated with the qualification.
  • For qualifications with majors, such as a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology, the Key Information for Students data will relate to the qualification, Bachelor of Arts, rather than the major, Psychology.

Data suppression

Some data is withheld from being displayed in the Key Information for Students. You’ll see N/A as an entry in the field where data has been suppressed. Some reasons for suppressing data are:

  • this is a new qualification and some data is not available; for example, successful course completions
  • individuals could be identified if this data is displayed
  • course completions data for Level 9 and 10 qualifications is not published as a large percentage of courses at these levels are research-based.

Data sources

Key Information for Students data is compiled from data published or provided by:

  • Tertiary education organisations
    • Entry requirements
    • Duration
    • Fees
  • Tertiary Education Commission
    • Student success
  • Ministry of Education
    • National graduate outcomes

Remember

  • Data is provided by the education provider and repackaged by the Tertiary Education Commission to produce the Key Information for Students.
  • Any errors in the provider-level data are to be raised with the education provider.

Domestic and international students

Remember

  • All information in the Key Information for Students relates to domestic students only.
  • Any enquiries about fees or other information for international students should be made to the education provider directly.
