Purpose of award

Our programmes are not intended for everyone. Our programmes are to prepare people for technical roles in science laboratories. If you do not want to work in a lab, these programmes are not for you.

Selection criteria

Dr James L. Smith (Smitty) Scholarship
Achievement without excuse

This award is named for a laboratory researcher with a long and distinguished career. When he was very young, Smitty lost his hearing. His education and early career were in an era before accommodations for disabilities. Smitty achieved brilliantly, but at various landmarks was advised not to even attempt the next level of education. Smitty proved the nay-sayers wrong through his accomplishments.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has overcome circumstances, whether a disability or not, to perform at excellent standards. Each scholarship includes a financial award of up to 10% of the tuition.


Phylis K. Demchick Scholarship
Family progress

This award was named for someone who was the first person in her family to earn a tertiary qualification. She used her diploma-level qualification to build a more successful and interesting career than many people with degrees.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual for whom completion of the programme will be a great achievement for both the individual and the family. Each scholarship includes a financial award of up to 10% of the tuition.


Phyllis A. Stadtwald Scholarship
Balancing family and career

This award was named for someone who had a successful career while meeting the diverse needs of family. She never let her career keep her from caring for her family. She never let her family keep her from doing an excellent job.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated the ability and commitment to not allow work (including study) obligations to cause neglecting of family, or family obligations to cause the neglecting of work (including study). Each scholarship includes a financial award of up to 10% of the tuition.


Robert L. Demchick Scholarship
Broad knowledge

It is interesting the way seemingly pointless bits of information come in useful in unanticipated situations. This award is named for someone with a very broad knowledge in many fields. As is true with most people with broad knowledge, much of his stored information was learned outside of a formal classroom setting.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated a broad knowledge in the sciences and beyond. Each scholarship includes a financial award of up to one 10% of the tuition


Werner H. Stadtwald Memorial Scholarship
Love of practical work

This award is named for a person who was doing excellently in a university architecture programme, but came to the realisation that he wanted to build not just design. He left university and had a very successful career as a builder.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has proven ability to achieve in theory learning, but has shown a special enthusiasm for practical work, especially laboratory practical work. Each scholarship includes a financial award of up to 10% of the tuition.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

When applying to a programme, a person may also apply for any scholarships that person believes are appropriate. It is possible for one person to hold more than one scholarship at the same time.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

We will advise you by e-mail about whether you have been accepted into the programme.
Once you tell us about your selection, we will send you an Offer of Place. This will inform you about the deadline for paying programme fees, confirm the programme start date, and is your guarantee that there is a space available for you in the chosen offering.

Decision makers

Have a telephone conversation with a Real World Education staff member as described in the short course. If you are accepted to the programme, you will have up to six months to select a specific offering (e.g. dates and, if applicable, Partnering Laboratory).

History or background of award

We have four programmes for people wanting to start or to advance careers in research or testing laboratories and two programmes for people wanting to start or to advance careers in school laboratories.

Additional information

Each of our programmes have interactive video lessons paired with practical learning in actual working laboratories. Participants are not left to flounder on their own; we monitor how they are doing. Tutorial help is available.
